Victoria the "Garden State"

Victoria is the smallest mainland state, about 35% of which being covered in forests. It mainly consists of open grazing and pastoral lands or plains, with some mountains in the south and centre. Vic offers many outstanding scenic Attractions and numerous Interesting places, it is a rewarding visit!

History
Vic was Australia's 3rd established colony, with the region little explored until Hume and Hovell moved across it in 1824-25. This was due to the NSW government. policy of confining European settlement close to Sydney. Though, small, unauthorised settlements were established at Sorento in 1803 and the Hentys from Van Diemens Land or Tas, established a permanent agricultural settlement at Portland in 1834. It remained a pastoral region until 1851, when gold rushes opened up the interior. Vic was soon populated with this discovery of gold, causing cities to be built, initiating industries and laying the foundations for the state, which hosted Australia's first home of national government.

Sites & Places

Economy
Victoria's largest income earners are its energy resources, principally due to distribution the raw materials and power for industry are concentrated within 80Km of Melbourne. The coal fields, which produce about 80% of Victoria's power needs, lie in Latrobe Valley, oil fields, which supply 70% of Australia's crude oil, are offshore in the Bass Strait.

Wheat is currently the major crop and occupies about 60% of the State's agricultural area, located north-west. Vic is also the major supplier of Australia's vegies and its central highlands and south-west properties provide some 5% of the nation's wool. Like I said, the other major industry of beef, dairy products, dry vine fruits and commercial timber, all contribute significantly to the Aussie economy.

Other

Fraser Island, this time in Victoria is a marvel, as seen in this splendid view, early morning. I'd say the number one thing to do here at this national Park, would be to take you 4WD and camping gear down, and go canoeing along the stream.

Port Campbell's Twelve Apostles boast there magnificence at sunset.

Mt Oberon, shows a great view, looking over Oberon Bay (Wilsons Promontory)
