Sydney

Sydney is the Capital of New South Wales, with a population of almost 3.5M.  It is the most populous city in Australia.  It has many memorable features, among these are the spectacular 'Sydney Harbour' and 'Sydney Opera house', recognised as an architectural masterpiece.  The city's cultural life evolves theatre, opera, ballet, modern dance and symphony concerts.

History
Sydney was founded in 1788 and is the nation's oldest and largest city, with much of its early history preserved in its sandstone buildings.  Among these are St James Church, the Argyle and Metcalf Bond Stores and Fort Denison, which was once an island prison in Sydney Harbour.  The oldest building in Sydney is recognised as Cadman's Cottage.

Sites & Places
The Royal Botanical Gardens are the site of Australia's first farm (24 hectares located in Macquarie), landscaped with lawns, gardens and exotic and Australian trees.   Hyde Park Barracks have been restored, revealing the city's history and convict times (located in Queens Square).  Also, nearby are The State Library of NSW, the Old Mint Building, Parliament House and St James Church.   These buildings are examples of early colonial architecture.  The Sydney Tower is Australia's largest building, between Pitt and Castlereagh Streets.  The tower is 325M above sea level and the two revolving restaurants gives outstanding scenes of the city and Greater Sydney.  The Art Gallery of NSW is located in the Domain.  The gallery houses the State art collection and from time to time it features specialised exhibitions of international renown.  Martin Place, a mall in the commercial heart of the city.  The mall features flower barrows and book stalls; the Cenotaph, where there is a ceremonial guard at 12.30 p.m. each Thursday; and an Amphitheatre where free entertainment is provided in the early afternoon each weekday. Kings Cross, the scene of bawdy nightclubs and strip-tease shows.

In front of the spectacular Sydney Harbour Bridge the Sydney Opera house dynamically stands out across the crystal shore.  A close up of the Opera house, as a concert is being performed, this shows greater detail of the authentic architecture adopted into this amazing construction.
