General
It is compulsory for children to attend school between the ages of five and fifteen.
Atleast 72% of students attend for free at government funded schools but others may attend
fee-paying private schools, many being run by religious bodies. School may be
attended by correspondance to those who live outside the city, such as in the outback or
to others with special reasoning.
High-school or secondary school begins in year 8, the year most students turn 13. After year 10 the decision to stay on till year 11/12 can be made. After compulsory education many different directions may be taken. To enter university generally you must complete year 12 and have the required achievement standards.
