Albany to Exmouth
Swan Valley
East of Perth at the foot of the Darling Range, it is best known for its high quality
wines, ranging from red and white table wines to fine ports and desert wines. There are
some twenty-one wineries in the region and one of the most notable is the historic
Caversham Estate, which was originally granted to Cap. John Roe, the State's first
surveyor-general, in 1840. The 35H property is located on the banks of the Swan River and
its warm climate and different alluvial and podsolic soils enable the successful
cultivation of a wide range of grape varieties. The Sandalfor cellars are aesthetically
situated amongst the vineyards. The main towns in the Swan Valley are Midland, a busy
railway centre and Guildford, which has many historic buildings and a number of museums.
Each Sunday local farmers bring their produce to the Midland markets, creating a lively
market-day atmosphere.
Two Peoples Bay
Located E of Albany, TPB (Two Peoples Bay) is best known for its nature reserve of the
same name. The reserve is comprised of 4639Hectares and was used as a whaling station in
the 1950's but today it contains some four hundred known flora
species, including the amazing insect-eating Albany pitcher plant. Other plant species
include banksia and orchids, best seen during spring and summer. The fauna
species range from kangaroos and wallabies to the rare noisy scrub bird and sea lions on
nearby Coffin Island.
Wittenoom
Located at the mouth of the Wittenoom Gorge, on the N face of the majestic Hamersley
Range. The mountains rise from the spinifex-covered plains of the tableland and unfold
into ever-changing shadows and colours. The deep gorges of the Pilbara are among Western
Australia's most spectacular scenic attractions and many of these are situated within easy
reach of Wittenoom.
Yallingup
This town is believed to have the best surf-beaches in Oz (I heard Bribie had those). The
most famous place of interest is Yallingup Cave which has several chambers containing many
limestone formations.
Yanchep
Located 51Km N of Perth, it consists of 2430Hs of parkland surrounded by the rustic charm
of Yanchep National Park on one side and the bustling activity of Sun City Marine on the
other. It first came to national attention when Perth millionaire entrepreneur and
developer Alan Bond launched his second campaign to win the America's Cup in 1977. The
area features black swans, a koala colony and Atlantis, an aquatic entertainment centre
with dolphins, seals and oceanarium. Other nearby attractions include the massive
limestone walls and intricate formations of Crystal Cave, as well as excellent fishing
waters and beaches.
