Rockhampton - Yeppoon
Rockhampton
Known for its architectural charm, Rockhampton is situated on the banks of the Fitzroy
River. Located 657Km north of Brisbane, it is regarded as the beef capital of
Australia. Some neat attractions include the botanic gardens, with shrubs, ferns,
flowers and bougainvilleas, Quay Street with its priceless collection of nineteenth
century buildings, the Walter Reid Cultural Centre, an old warehouse and arts and crafts
centre. Also the Gem and Mineral Centre, which displays and sells jewellery created
from local stone.
Roma
Located near the junction of the Warrego and Carnarvon highways, Roma's most notable
attraction is the Romaville Winery, Queensland's oldest operative winery, established in
1863. Other attractions include Campbell Park, a picnic area offering delicious
views of the surrounding countryside, Memorial Avenue, which is lined with bottle trees
and the abandoned oil rig at Narraburra Station, which dates back to the 1930s.
Sarina
South of Mackay, Sarina is a notable sugar town and coal-loading base. Other
attractions include some exquisite beaches and geranium gardens.
Shute Harbour
Shute Harbour, not surprisingly, is the major inland staging point for the Whitsunday
Group Islands. It is surrounded by the hills of Conway National Park and by rich
cane fields. It is known as Australia's busiest port in terms of boat and passenger
movements.
Somerset
Somerset is known as being the most Northern centre on the Australian mainland.
Today, all that remains of this pioneering settlement are ruins.
Stanthorpe
Is renowned for its apples and is the major centre of the granite belt. It is the
centre of a large fruit growing and wine industry. The town is located 225Km
south-west of Brisbane, in the mountain along the border between Queensland and New South
Wales.
Stadbroke Island
Directly east of Brisbane, it is a large island some 34Km long. It creates a barrier
between Moreton Bay and the mainland. Jumpinpin, the stretch of water separating
north and south Stradbroke Island, was formed in 1896 when the sea bisected the island.
Stradbroke is a popular attraction for fishermen and surfers. A-mid its
attractions are Dunwich, a historic town established in 1828. Amity Point, once the
site of a pilot station, where still waters provide excellent fishing and sailing, Point
Lookout, where magnificent surfing beaches are patrolled by lifesavers and finally, many
freshwater lakes. Interesting features are the Aboriginal middens, extensive heaps
of bleached shells where Aborigines camped and feasted on shellfish, a number can be found
on the dunes of Twenty-Two Mile Beach.
Sunshine Coast
It stretches from Noosa Heads in the north to Bribie Island in the south and consists of a
chain of spectacular beaches on the shores of the Pacific Ocean. This makes the
perfect holiday with its outrageous surf, malls and resorts. It always has plenty to
show and do. It is a pleasant alternative to the Gold Coast and makes for a easy and
safe trip from Brisbane.
Thursday Island
Located off the tip of Cape York Peninsula, it is a colourful outpost, with European
minority among the native islanders, Malays, Polynesians, Chinese and Japanese.
Tinaroo Dam
This dam was constructed to meet the irrigation requirements of the local tobacco crop.
This dam holds 2/3 the volume of water in the Sydney Harbour. It is
surrounded by 3 national parks, which attract tourists all year round. Other
attractions include a series of rapids below the dam and you can see platypuses in
the dam.
Toowoomba Toowoomba is Queensland's largest inland city and is the commercial centre for the fertile Darling Downs (one of the richest agricultural areas in the world). Located 130Km west of Brisbane on the rim of the Great Dividing Range, it features beautiful gardens, shady parks, tree-lined streets and is known as Queensland's Garden City. |
Townsville
Townsville, interestingly enough, is North Queensland's unofficial capital, believing that
has something to do with its international airport. It is the administrative centre
for the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. The main attractions are Castle
Hill, situated behind the city centre and offering magnificent views. Also, the
Breakwater Casino - casinos attract the most tourism, because they are the most fun.
Once again Townsville is a stepping-off point for islands resorts & the Great
Barrier Reef.
Tully
This town has the neat reputation of being the wettest centre in Australia. In the
mountains behind the town are many fast-flowing rivers and streams which draw canoeists
world wide to themselves.
Yeppoon
This is a recently developed town in the main commercial centre on the Capricorn Coast.
Facilities available include boat hire, ramp and world-class accommodation at the
international resort. The most notable event occurs September, annually when the
pineapple festival is held.
