Advancetown Lake
This is a lake south of Nerang. It has Absolutely fabulous scenery and a
reconstructed slab cottage containing pioneer relics (north end of lake).
Airlie Beach
Located south-central coast of Queensland, these are the best beaches. This is the
principal mainland centre for the Whitsunday-Cumberland Group islands. It provides
manpower, services and supplies to the island resorts. It provides a holiday centre
with camping, dining and entertainment facilities.
Atherton
Atherton is an agricultural area and is covered in solos storing Maize. Every August
the town is host to a maize festival. This is its annual attraction.
Beaudesert
66Km from Brisbane and is a rich rural area for Queensland. Attractions here include
Beaudesert Pioneer Cottage and Historical House, a pioneer museum containing early day
household treasures. It is not a desert.
Birdsville
To spite its small size it is one of the most famous settlements in Australia.
Located near New South Wales, South Australia and Queensland borders it is the mother of
the Birdsville Track and consists of little more than a hotel. The track is
considered hazardous.
Blackall Range
The most famous feature of this range is the Glasshouse mountains. The Glasshouse
mountains are visible from the Bruce Highway, a common and useful way. Attractions
other than include a model English village (Flaxton), Mapleton and Kondalilla Falls
(Mapleton being the most exciting), the scenic Obi Obi Gorge and a museum at Montville.
Bribie Island
60Km north of Brisbane with some of Brisbane's best beaches. It has sheltered
surfing beaches. It is famous for its wildflower show between August and December,
the island is a bird and animal sanctuary.
Bowen Home to Horseshoe Bay. 1000Km north of Brisbane, midway between Townsville & Mackay is a major port for the Whitsunday Group islands and is also a major rural centre for small crop farming. Was founded in 1861 and served as the base for the complete exploration and settlement of North Queensland. |
Bundaberg
Situated on the banks of the Burnette River and is the centre of a rich agricultural
district. Sugar is the main industry here, with distillation of Bundaberg Rum.
Attractions include a museum displaying national customs on life-sized models, a
conservatorium of antiques and Queensland's first fruit winery. Nearby attractions
include the "Hummock", a once active volcano and the only hill in the district.
Dreamtime Reptile Reserve, Mystery Craters, which are some 25M years old and Mons
Repos, a well known turtle rookery.
Cairns
Far north off Queensland's coast, it is one of the states largest tourist centres.
The city is situated near the Great Barrier Reef, the Atherton Tableland, Cape York and
gulf country. Between September - December the town becomes the focus for the annual
black marlin season, attracting fishermen world wide. The offshore reefs and islands
include Lizard Island, wildlife filled with excellent fishing grounds and Green Island, a
coral Cay with an underwater observatory. Offshore attractions include Reef World, a
giant aquarium of fish, turtles and marine life, The botanic Gardens, with 200 species of
palms and over 10 000 varieties of plants. The Big Boomerang, displaying Aboriginal
& Pacific Island artefacts, Crystal Clear Streams, waterfalls, lush tropical
rainforests and mysterious lake craters.
Cammoo Caves
North-west of Rockhampton, they are noted for their marine fossils, stalactites,
stalagmites, oolites and cave corals. At short distance of north-east are Olsens
Caves, noted for their limestone formations and trailing tree roots which run for hundreds
of metres.
Cape York
Rich in Aboriginal cave paintings and rock engravings, Cape York is recognised as being
one of the last great wilderness areas in the world. The landscape consists of
broken gorges, picturesque escarpments and silica sandhills. It is also a habitat
for some of the world's rarest animals.
Charters Towers
This town was established due to the findings of gold in 1871, many of the buildings of
that era can be found. Some reminders of the past include the Venus ore-crushing
battery, the Royal Arcade and essay room and the old bell tower of St Columba's Church
(erected in 1877). Other attractions include Ay Ot Lookout, an old house constructed
in 1890. West is the Porcupine Gorge National Park with views of Burdekin Valley and
surrounding ranges (viewed from Bucklands Hill). A nearby attraction also is the
ghost town of Ravenswood, situated to the south-east of Charters Towers.
Cooktown
This settlement was named after Captain Cook where he repaired his ship 'Endeavour' in
1770. It was erected in 1873 as the port for the Palmer River goldfields. It
is a historic district centre.
Cunnamulla
Located in central Southern Queensland, Cunnamulla was once the major centre for the
nearby Yowah opal fields. Attractions include the Eulo Queen Hotel (named after Eulo
Queen who reigned over the fields at the turn of the century) and the historical relics
displayed at the Cunnamulla Shire Hall.
Dunk Island
Situated off the coast (North Queensland), Dunk Island features rainforests, palm trees
and wildflowers. The island Resort offers everything from tennis to archery and the
surrounding water allows visitors to pursue the full range of water activities available.
This island is also a stepping-off point for tourists to the Great Barrier Reef and
other island resorts.
Emu Park
Emu Park is located along the south-east coast from Yeppoon and its main attraction is the
Singing Ship memorial, a 12M high structure containing pipes that echo in the wind's
breeze. It is situated at Churchill Lookout, which offers extaudinary views of
nearby islands.
Fraser Island This is a wonderful place to go camping or to take your 4WD. It is characterised by great sweeping beaches which stretch along the 322Km of coastline. The many inland lakes and gorges, crystal-clear creaks and lagoons, rainforests and abundant fauna and flora make this a naturist's, botanist's, birdwatcher's and photographer's dream. The surf beaches and inland lakes also offer excellent fishing opportunities. |
