Perth, the capital of Western Australia has now a population of over 1M. It is situated 20Km inland on the banks of the Swan River.
History
It was founded by Lieutenant Governor James Stirling and an advanced party of settlers,
who arrived from HMS Sulphur and HMS Permelia on 1 June 1829.
Economy
The early development of Perth was considerably slow because of the colony's continuos
economic illness but discoveries of gold at Coolgardie in 1892 and Kalgoorlie in 1893 led
to an increase in the population. Many settled in Perth after the first gold rushes
and within a decade its population had grown to 60,000. As the city of Perth was
isolated from the rest of Australia the completion of the Trans-Australia Railway in 1917
made the state accessible and ideal.
