New South Wales is Australia's oldest and most populous state.  Its capital, Sydney, is regarded as the hub of the South Pacific.  The state encompasses the Australian Capital Territory.  Its 1100Kms of coastline are renowned for superb surfing beaches and its fine coastal ranges and national parks are an attraction for tourists world-wide.  The 16 week ski-season attracts many of the less-fortunate Australians who don't have the benefit of snow.  This state offers plenty of recreational activities, with its fantastic cave systems and semidesert plains, along with its lakes, river systems and ocean inlets.

History
The colony of NSW became official on 7 February 1788, at Sydney Cove.  At first NSW dominated the entire eastern section of Australia, including Tasmania.  Today the state only occupies approximately 10% of Australia's land mass.

Economy
The State's major industry is seafood.  Whaling and Sealing were the State's first major industry, helping sustain a growing colony in the early years.  Whaling was banned in 1978, however, fisheries still play an important role in the economy.   Today, the school prawn and eastern king prawn are being harvested off the coast of New South Wales, contributing to a national industry worth $100M per year.  The oyster harvest make up more than 90% of Australia's annual production of some 9M Kg of Oysters.  The World Wide renowned oyster, "Sydney Rock Oyster", has an annual production valued over $12M a year.

Blue Mountains National Park, one of the many scenic parks in NSW.  Located about half-way down the east coast.  The second picture is of Wentworth Falls which, once again is located in this park. At the very high altitude you get to view   surrounding mountains and gorges.
