Hobart

Hobart, the capital of Tasmania is situated on the banks of the Derwent River, it is also the state government administration centre.  The city was settled in 1803, much of its colonial history being preserved in its old homes and folk museums.

The historic buildings set it apart from any other Australian capital.  Many buildings being constructed of sandstone or brick, they can be located in the heart of the old city at the intersection of Macquarie and Murray Streets.  This area being labelled the finest townscape in Australia.  Hobart's oldest building is the Commissariat Store, located 40 Macquarie Street.  It was constructed between 1808 and 1810.  Nearby is Legacy House, constructed 1850. Old Court House is also located Macquarie street, it faces Macquarie street and Franklin Square.  The court was erected in 1823-24 and was later reconstructed in 1859-64 to serve as a post office.  The most notable colonial building on Macquarie street is Parliament House, erected 1840.

Basically Tasmania is a colonial type place, with many preserved buildings, which are great attractions.

Image one, probably reveals one of Australia's most tragic areas. Port Arthur brings back a lot of tragic memories for all involved in 1996's Port Arthur Massacre, where over 30 people were tragically murdered in one man's killing spree.

Image two, thankfully not home to such disaster, reveals the Wrest Point Casino at Sandy Bay.

The image at the top of this page is a mountainous view, and a tower of some sort, behind Salamanka Place Markets.

with Port Arthur you can see the colonial side, however Wrest Point Casino view doesn't give you that colonial prospective - there are more pictures under 'interesting places' - including a 'to-come' edition of port arthur pictures, courtesy of Jasmine Barnett
