Interesting Places Larimah - Yarrawonga Wildlife Park
Larimah
Situated between Mataranka and Dly Waters on the Stuart Highway is best known for the old
disused railway which leads to Darwin.
Marrakai Plains
Located 80km south-east of Darwin, between Arnhem Land and Stuart Highways. The plains and
lagoons are noted for their prolific wildlife including buffaloes, wallabies, jabirus,
egrets, magpie gees and the large and elegant brolga. Also contains magnetic and cathedral
termite mounds. Travelling here should be undertaken in 4WD.
Mataranka
Located south of Katherine, is noted for its hot-water springs, a series of waterholes fed
from underground thermal pools set amongst luxuriant tropical vegetation. This area has a
variety of wildlife and other attractions, some of which include short walking tracks and
the historic Mataranka Homestead.
Melville Island
Situated at the entrance to Van Diemens Gulf, 50Km north of Darwin, Melville Island was
the site of the first northern mainland settlement. The settlement was abandoned in 1827,
moving to nearby Coburg Peninsula. Today the island is best known for its 4000 square Km
Aboriginal Reserve.

Mount Stuart This is the geographic centre of the Australian continent, surroundings best known for the Devils Marbles, granite boulders weathered over an eon and piled seemingly unbalanced on top of each other.

Ormiston Gorge
Situated 132Km west of Alice Springs, is one of the most colourful and attractive places
in the west MacDonnell Ranges.
Pine Creek
Situated 250Km south of Darwin, is famous as the early goldmining region of NT. It is now
a sleepy town consisting of one hotel, several interesting buildings and now the derelict
railway station. It is an interesting stop-over point and alternative route to Jim Jim or
El Sharana. The pines produced close to $4M worth of gold during the living years of 1872
- 1874.
Robin Falls
Situated 16Km south of Adelaide River on the Stuart Highway. The attractive falls are
located a short walk from the camping and car park area and are popular with weary
travellers anxious to bathe in the clear waters of the rockhole at their base. The Top End
is noted for many falls, the best known being Edith Falls near Katherine and Jim Jim Falls
in Kakadu National Park.
Ross River 88km east of Alice Springs and is the site of an original pioneer station, now a ranch-style resort. It offers cabin accommodation and resort activities including riding and swimming. |
Simpsons Gap
Situated 18Km west of Alice Springs is the main feature of a national park bearing the
same name, an area noted for rugged ranges, a wide variety of fauna
and flora and many points of interest.
South Alligator River
South Alligator Motor Inn is located 180Km from Darwin along the Arnhem Highway and
provides accommodation and a variety of other facilities. Arrangements can be made in
interest for taking a cruise from motel on the Kakadu Princess along the South
Alligator Creek. The scenic river scapes are among the best in Australia and salt
water crocodiles can be seen basking on the river banks.

World's Largest Buffalo
A giant model buffalo can be seen on the Stuart Highway, 11Km south of Darwin.
Serving as a reminder of Territory wildlife and as a promotion gimmick for the nearby gift
store.
Yarrawonga Wildlife Park
20Km south of Darwin, the zoo offers close-up views of some of the Territory's wildlife.
