Adelaide River
Situated on Stuart Highway, 110Km from Darwin, it is a colourful town and a popular
stop-over. It is known for its war cemetery - where those who died during the war-time
bombing of Darwin rest.
Alice Springs
Known as 'Red Centre', is located almost in the geographic centre of Australia. It is an
oasis surrounded by some of Australia's most incredible, beautiful mountain and desert
scenery. In 1872 it was settled as an Overland Telegraph station, today is a
thriving cattle and tourist centre. Attractions include Anzac Hill with its superb views
of Alice Springs and surrounding ranges. Also, Royal flying Doctor base, Alice
Springs Casino, situated on Barnett Drive and a camal farm on Emily Gap Road.
Another major attraction is the Diarama Village which traces the myths and legends of the
Australian Aborigines. Featuring wood carvings, Arnhem Land crafts, bark paintings and
water-coloured and sand paintings.
Alice Springs Art Galleries
There are 14 galleries in Alice Springs, including the intriguing Diarama Village, as
above. Other galleries include Panorama Guth, which houses the works of painter Henk Guth.
Main attraction is a panoramic painting of central Australia that has a
circumference of 60m and stands 6m high. The Pitchi Ritchi Sanctuary is a well known
outdoor gallery, featuring remarkable tree sculptures by William Ricketts.

Arnhem Highway
Kakadu National Park is off this highway, which cruises along the South Alligator Creek.
Other scenes of the highway include abundant birdlife, lakes and flood plains and
colourful landscapes.
Berry Springs
Situated within nature reserve, 55Km south of Darwin, is one of several attractive camping
and picnic areas in the Top End. It is a popular weekend retreat for many 'Darwinites' and
features picnic facilities, nature walks and cool, clear-flowing streams. The revers,
creeks and lagoons of the Top End are natural habitants for thousands of waterfowl and
other birds.
Daly River Mission Church
East Alligator River
Best Australian outback scenery here. Known not only for Barramundi but also for the
salt-water crocodiles which inhabit the river and surrounding areas.
Hermannsburg Mission
This mission is best known as the birth place of Albert Namatjira, a member the Aranda
tribe. His paintings are a marvel but it is unfortunate that he was under the
influence of Europeans, giving his work false meaning. (Information on

Howard Springs
Located 26Km south of Darwin, they are natural springs set in lush, tropical rainforest
and serviced by barbecue and kiosk facilities. The springs are noted for their relaxing
atmosphere and for their beaut swimming.

Jim Jim Gorge Kakadu
Katherine
Located south-east of Darwin on the Stuart Highway, it is a service centre for the
surrounding cattle industry. Many features include horticultural ventures, such as
rock-melon growing at Adelaide River and mangoes at Manbulloo Station. Katherine
is expected to become the garden centre of the NT.
Kings Canyon
323Km south-west of Alice Springs, this huge canyon has many impressive sights including
sheer walls with striking colours and lush vegetation, including the pre-historic cycads,
maintained by permanent waterholes.
