ADELAIDE

History
Adelaide was founded in 1836 by Colonel William Light and named after the wife of King William IV.  The location was chosen on basis of its good water supply, good drainage, productive land and sheltering hills, also selected was Port Adelaide as a harbour for the city.

The population of Adelaide is nearing 1 million, being referred to the best planned city in Australia.  This city is a unique blend of past and present with multistorey office blocks set against the solid bluestone buildings and colonial architecture.

Sites & Scenes
North Terrace is the site of several historic buildings.  One side is marked by commercial buildings and on the other by the University of Adelaide, the State Library, the Art Gallery of South Australia and the South Australian Museum and Government House, established 1838 to 1840.

Holy Trinity Church is also situated in North Terrace, constructed in 1838, it was the first Anglican church built in the State.  The Church was rebuilt in 1888.  The most remarkable feature is its tower clock made by Vulliamy, clockmaker to King William IV.

Other features of Adelaide include the annual Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix through the streets, the botanic gardens, which are located at North Terrace.  These gardens occupy 16 hectares and feature many Australian and exotic plants as well as a lake, home to swans and ducks.  Greenhouses contain many spectacular and interesting plant species.

The city's cultural activities are often held in the Festival Centre.  This $20 million performing arts complex is located on a magnificent site near the city centre.   It consists of a multipurpose concert hall and lyric theatre, a drama theatre, an experimental theatre and an open-air amphitheatre.  The centre was completed in 1977, and its most recent addition is the $400 000 Silver Jubilee Organ.
